The past few days, the radio station I listen to most often has been playing "Personal Jesus" by Depeche Mode. Listening to it on the way home yesterday, I got to thinking. Here's a snippet of the lyrics:

I'm not sure, but I think the song is referring to the tele-evangelists, poking fun at them. But listening to it on the way home, I got to thinking about the name "Personal Jesus". As Christians, we each have our own "Personal Jesus". Jesus cares, and Jesus is there for each one of us, personally. All we have to do is call.

I believe that this song was originally written by Johnny Cash. A new angle.
Interesting. I never knew that. Do you know if he ever recorded it himself?
FYI, I believe he just did a cover of it, much as he did with the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt.
An allmusic.com search (click the link to view the results) on the song name reveals that he had a version of it on the American IV: The Man Comes Around album, released in 2002. The composer is credited as Martin L. Gore, originally released in 1989 given the earliest year listed there.
